NEW FUNERAL ART CIRCUIT: VISIT OF MOUNT ROYAL AND JEWISH CEMETERIES

To complement the exhibition Our Mountain. Memoirs of mount Royal currently on display at the Musée des Hospitalières, come and discover the Jewish cemeteries on mount Royal, including the history of the first Jews in Montreal and the evolution of cemeteries in the 18th and 19th centuries, passing by the funerary rituals practiced and the symbolism in the funerary art depicted.

New Circuit

August 9th, september 24th and october 15th 2023

The visit will start at the entrance of the Mount Royal Cemetery. The community established in Montreal founded the Spanish and Portuguese Shearith Israel Synagogue in 1768. It was the first Jewish congregation in the new British colony in Quebec. Then follow the congregations Shaar Hashomayim and Temple Emanu-el. Learn even more about Jewish communities, burial rituals, and hidden symbolism in the funerary art depicted.
